  • Ø  There are Trials Coming (Luke 22:39-44)

    • Pray that God will prepare you for the trials to come (Luke 22:41-42).

    • The word agony means “to wrestle, to fight, to strive, or to endure” (Luke 22:44).

    • Jesus knew the suffering that He would face on the cross (Matthew 20:22).

    • Are you resisting temptation to the point of bloodshed? (Luke 22:44; Hebrews 12:4).

  • Ø  Christ Was Obedient Through His Suffering

    • Prophecies of Jesus on the cross in Psalm 22:1-18:

§ He would be ridiculed (vv. 7-8).
§ His hands and feet would be pierced (v. 16).
§ They would cast lots for His clothing (v. 18).
§ God would turn away from Jesus on the cross (v. 1).

    • Christ prayed three times for God’s will to be done in Him (Matthew 26:38-44).

    • Christ was obedient, even to the point of death (John 3:16, 8:28).

    • Will you walk with Christ through your suffering? (Psalm 23:4).

  • Ø  Christ Knew His Purpose

    • Jesus knew the reason for his birth (John 18:37).

    • People were attracted to Jesus’ anointing, not his outward appearance (Isaiah 53:2).

§ Jesus was hated by the religious leaders, he was from a despised village (Nazareth), and many questioned the legitimacy of his birth.

  • Ø  There is Hope in Christ

    • Christ was given to us by God (Isaiah 9:6).

    • He suffered for our benefit (Isaiah 53:3-5).

    • Hymn:

      • §  I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene. And wonder how He could love me a sinner condemned unclean.

      • §  He took my sins and my sorrows. He made them His very own. He bore the burden to Calvary and suffered and died alone.

      • §  When with the ransomed in glory His face I at last shall see. ‘Twill be my joy through the ages to sing of His love for me.

      • §  How Marvelous! How Wonderful! And my song shall ever be. Oh How Marvelous! Oh How Wonderful is my Savior’s love for me!

  • Ø  The Agony of Christ Should Arouse Us from Our Stupor

• The agony that Christ endured will be different from that of the wicked.

§ Christ was not judged by a guilty or condemning conscience. § He felt no torment from inward corruptions and lusts.
§ Christ knew that God infinitely loved Him.
§ Christ did not suffer as the wicked do in Hell.
